Net Zero Commitment Statement

At Acute Ambulance & Medical Services (A.A.M.S), we recognise the critical role the healthcare sector must play in addressing climate change and protecting the health of future generations. In line with the wider NHS ambition, we have made a firm commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
This pledge supports the NHS-wide goal of becoming the world’s first net zero national health service, and we are proud to be part of this journey.
Our Targets
To meet this ambitious objective, A.A.M.S is working towards two key milestones:
  • Reducing direct carbon emissions by 80% between 2036 and 2039.
  • Achieving full net zero status across our operations by 2040.
These targets are aligned with the NHS Net Zero Strategy, ensuring our efforts contribute to a broader, system-wide reduction in environmental impact.
How We’re Taking Action
We are actively implementing a range of strategies to reduce emissions and operate more sustainably across every aspect of our services. Our current and planned actions include:
1. Fleet Transition to Electric Vehicles (EVs)
We are in the process of transitioning our ambulance and support vehicles to electric models. This will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our transport operations, which are a major contributor to healthcare-related emissions.
2. Decarbonising Energy and Heating Systems
A.A.M.S is reviewing and upgrading our facilities to adopt energy-efficient systems, including the decarbonisation of heating and the integration of renewable energy sources where possible.
3. Sustainable Travel and Transport
Guided by the NHS Net Zero Travel and Transport Strategy, we are encouraging sustainable travel choices, including increased use of active travel, public transport, and the reduction of unnecessary journeys through better logistics and remote service options.
4. Procurement and Supply Chain Sustainability
We are working with suppliers and partners who share our commitment to sustainability. By making more environmentally responsible procurement decisions, we aim to reduce emissions throughout our supply chain.
5. Staff Engagement and Training
We believe that meaningful change comes from within. Our team members are being engaged and trained in sustainability practices, ensuring that everyone plays a part in our journey to net zero.
Supporting a Healthier Planet and Population
Climate change is recognised as a health emergency. By reducing our environmental impact, A.A.M.S is not only supporting the fight against climate change but also promoting cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more resilient healthcare system.
Our net zero commitment is more than a target—it’s a core part of our responsibility to patients, communities, and the future of healthcare. We are determined to lead by example, continually improving our environmental performance and aligning with best practices across the NHS.
Transparency and Progress
We will continue to monitor, measure, and report on our progress transparently. This includes setting interim goals, evaluating performance annually, and adapting our strategies based on the latest data and innovations.
By doing so, we aim to remain accountable and inspire confidence in our stakeholders that A.A.M.S is fully committed to a sustainable future.
Join Us on the Journey
We invite our staff, partners, and service users to join us on our journey to net zero. Together, we can make a meaningful difference—supporting health, wellbeing, and the environment for generations to come.
